Quantitative ability, verbal ability and the interview round — what IPMAT rewards and how to prepare for each.
IPMAT looks like an aptitude test, but the students who clear it treat it as a mathematics test with a language section attached. Understanding that emphasis early saves months.
The quantitative section is where selection actually happens. The short-answer questions carry negative-marking-free scoring at IIM Indore in most years, which means every unattempted question is a wasted opportunity. Arithmetic, algebra, sequences and series, and logarithms repeat across papers with remarkable consistency. Build absolute fluency in these before touching advanced topics; a student who is flawless in arithmetic outscores a student who is average across everything.
The verbal section rewards reading habit more than vocabulary lists. Two months of reading long-form journalism daily will do more for your reading comprehension accuracy than a thousand flashcards. That said, IPMAT does test grammar and word usage directly, so keep a running list of errors you make in practice rather than memorising generic word lists.
Speed is the hidden third section. Most candidates can solve the paper; far fewer can solve it in the time given. From your second month of preparation, every practice set should be timed. Aim to finish quantitative sets with five minutes to spare, and use those five minutes to revisit flagged questions rather than to attempt new ones.
The personal interview and written ability round separates similar scorers. Panels ask why management at eighteen, what you read, and what you have done outside academics. Rehearsed answers are visible instantly. Instead, prepare three genuine stories — a project, a failure, a responsibility you carried — and be able to discuss each in specific detail.
A realistic preparation window is nine to twelve months alongside Class 12 boards. Students who start in January of Class 12 can still succeed, but they must sacrifice breadth and go deep on quantitative ability, mock discipline and interview preparation only.
